Rajarajan Manimandapam Thanjavur – Where Past Continues to Linger Forever

Built during the 8th World Tamil Conference held in Thanjavur in 1991 in order to honour the Great Chola King Rajarajan, this is a beautiful place to experience ancient times in all its rustic charm. The place is opened for public access from 10.00 am to 8.00 pm on all days. The architecture of the build reminds of the structures that were built by the great Chola kings during their regimes.

The Rajarajan Manimandapam has plenty of options for people and children to indulge in various activities. There is a beautiful garden at the Rajarajan Manimandapam with many swings, and children will definitely find this place an exciting one to spend time swinging.

The museum at the Rajarajan Manimandapam is located at the ground floor of the building. The museum was built by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu in 1984 to celebrate the 1000th birth anniversary of the great Chola king Raja Raja Chola. King Raja Raja Chola was the most famous King in the Chola dynasty that ruled Thanjavur. The Chola dynasty was the best and greatest of all the dynasties that ruled South India. He was respected and loved for his promotion of art and culture, royal endeavours, efficient administration and feared for a myriad of military conquests. It was King Raja Raja Chola who raised the status of the Chola dynasty to the unexpected heights and founded the way on which the dynasty flourished, grew and spread across the South of India for two long centuries.

The museum is located at the ground floor of the structure and houses some of the most valuable, exotic and antique collection of sculptures, coins, bronze statues and paintings along with a myriad of artefacts that are hundreds of years old. Another element to enjoy and take notice at the museum is the beautiful statue of the Chola king Raja Raja Chola.

Manimandapam is also surrounded by several beautifully built, maintained and decorated gardens with great lamps erect across the gardens. The fountain set in the middle of the garden is a delight to watch and it is definitely a thing of excitement for children who are at the museum. With amusing lighting, the museum has an otherworldly charm and beauty in the night that can surely take you back to the ancient time when the great Chola king ruled here.

It was on the loving memory of the great Chola king that this place was built. Being one of the most prominent tourist spots where people come from around the world, Manimandapam has become a must-see place for travellers, especially for those who love exploring ancient cultures of India.
